How to make hessian and lace place mats

We had some friends over for dinner last night and I simply wanted to make the table look pretty, so I whipped up some pretty placemats. They were fairly quick and easy to make and you only need hessian and lace! Here's the DIY if you want a pretty table for your lovely dinner guests.

Supplies needed - 1m Hessian, 3m thick trim lace (I used a pink for two and cream from the other two), sewing machine and white thread.

1. Cut four rectangles of 18" by 14" hessian fabric. Then cut 8 14" strips of lace.
2. Using a zig zag stitch and white thread sew all the way around each mat to prevent fraying. Pull the top and bottom loose threads out to create a slightly frayed look and trim the two sides.
3. Pin a strip of lace to each side of your mat. Change your sewing machine to a straight stitch and sew along the top and along the inside line of the lace to attach it to the hessian.
4. Trim off any loose threads and trim along the lace at the top and bottom to straighten.
5. Enjoy your placemats, dinner party and lovely comments about your fab placemats.
